Reflections on Photography: OVF v.s EVF
1. The era of DSLRs has swiftly passed, yet I cherish the authenticity of perceiving light and warmth through the retina. As I ponder the limitations of EVF, melancholy sets in.
2. I took a photo for two of my cameras. One is NIKON DSLR D4S, possibly the top-notch in terms of design and ergonomics. The other is the flagship mirrorless Z9.
3. The era of DSLRs has swiftly passed, yet I cherish the authenticity of perceiving light and warmth through the retina. As I ponder the limitations of EVFs, melancholy sets in.
5. When I realize the photographers of next generation can only see through an electronic viewfinder before capturing the moment, a sense of melancholy creeps into my heart.
6. Cameras come in various forms. However, one thing has been directly skipped over by history: a camera with a reflex mirror that also has the almighty autofocus as mirrorless cameras.
7. Imagine if Nikon were to release a D7, using OVF while maintaining the autofocus performance of the Z9. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Of course, I’m not referring to the Live View version like NIKON D780, but a true marriage of D and Z.
8. What prevents the existence of such a camera? Is it the physical limitations (the space below the mirror can only accommodate a small area of autofocus points)?
9. Or is it a matter of cost? (Double autofocus modules below the mirror and on the sensor?)
10. If it’s purely a matter of cost, it’s understandable to abandon the reflex mirror because it becomes a burden for the camera when it has to handle video recording.
11. Furthermore, “vibration and noise caused by the reflex mirror” has always been annoying. It might be better to follow the example of the Z9, leaving the sensor alone and simulating the shutter sound through a speaker.
12. “Enjoying the sound of a shutter release” has gradually become a nostalgic experience in this era.
13. The more I think about it, the more I understand the various reasons why the camera industry has moved away from reflex mirrors.
14. However, if someone were to create a “DSLR with the focus ability of Mirrorless”, I might still leave the EVF without hesitation, even though Z9 are good enough. I believe the experience of an OVF is second to none.
